Groote Post has released its unwooded wines of the 2003 vintage - the wood - matured Chardonnay will be released later on. The Darling area has now been declared a District in the South Africa wine of Origin system. Co-owner Nick Pentz welcomes this as he feels that Darling produces totally different wines from the Swartland District with which it was previously grouped. The vineyards of Groote Post are only 5 km away from the Atlantic Ocean and thus benefit from the cool breezes in summer.
Groote Post Sauvignon Blanc 2003 is described as having aromas of nettles, cut grass, and subtle tropical fruit with a crisp acidity. Selling at approximately R58 per bottle.
Chenin Blanc 2003 is unique as it comes from 21 year old bushvines with low yield, which ensures concentrated flavours such as guava and fruit salad but well balanced with natural acid. Selling at approximately R35 per bottle.
Chardonnay grapes come from the coolest area at Groote Post - only 400m above sea level. Again a very low yield (4 tons per hectare) ensures concentrated aromas of lime, apple and tropical fruit. Selling at approximately R59 per bottle.
This farm is worth visiting - apart from the wine tasting and sales, it in addition offers nature walks, picnics and lunches. The restaurant is situated in an 18th century restored manor house, now the national monument, specializing in country cooking.
