MANUKA@SOUTHEYS NEWSLETTER NUMBER 2 - December 2004
Hi everybody!
Welcome to Newsletter No 2 from the Manuka@Southeys team.
Introduction
Firstly, a very big WELCOME to those of you who will be receiving our Newsletter for the first time. There are very many new names that have been added to the list in the last 2 months. And of course, an equally big WELCOME to our original guests.
Manuka Café
The BIG news from Manuka Café is that as from this Thursday, 9th December, we will be staying open until 10.00pm every Thursday, Friday & Saturday night until further notice.
So, if you are coming to town, (Somerset West) to see the magnificent Christmas lights, or to visit the evening markets, don't forget to pop in to Manuka @ Southeys either before or after. Or you can grab a pizza or two to take with you. How about sundowners in the garden, a glass of wine, a cocktail or two? Whatever your needs, Manuka@Southeys will be the place to be!
Wine Shop
We now have a range of wine-related and other gifts to help with your Christmas shopping. Picnic bags, wine chillers, corkscrews, the 2005 John Platter, Willow Creek Olive Oil & Balsamic Vinegar gift sets in beautiful hand-painted ceramic decanters, & Morgenster Olive Oil gift packs.
I am regularly introducing new wines, continuing to seek out wines that offer great value for money.
Some of the new wines introduced over the last couple of months include:
Lindhorst Wines - the Shiraz, the Pinotage, and Statement, which is a Shiraz/Merlot blend
Cloof Crucible Shiraz - Veritas Double Gold, Michelangelo Gold
Diemersfontein Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon
Flagstone - 8 wines, including "The Berrio" Sauvignon Blanc, a personal favourite
Klein Constantia Sauvignon Blanc and Vin de Constance
Kanonkop 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2002 Pinotage
Moreson Cap Classique
Steenberg 1682 Brut Cap Classique
Shaka Zulu Shiraz - 3 1/2* in Platter - and only R33pb! Less than R10/*, how about that for value?
There are also limited quantities of rare vintage wines including:
1991 Meerlust Rubicon
1992 KWV Roodeberg
1993 Stellenryck Cabernet Sauvignon
1995 Meerlust Merlot
Wine Tastings
An informal wine tasting is held every Saturday morning from 11.00-14.00. Forthcoming tastings include:
Dec 11 – Wildekrans
Jan 15 – Bellevue
Dec 18 – Whalehaven
Jan 22 – Coleraine
Jan 8 – Webersburg & Dalla Cia
Jan 29 – Webersburg & Dalla Cia
"Meet the Winemaker" Dinners
We had our first 2 "Meet the Winemaker" dinners with Ruitersvlei and Nelson's Creek in October and November, and what a great success they were, with many guests immediatley booking for the next dinner. In fact they were so successful that we put on an extra dinner for December with Flagstone wines, but this was also very quickly booked up.
We already have a number of reservations for our January and February dinners, so if you want to attend these, we recommend that you book as soon as possible. The cost is R115, incl service charge, and we do require payment with your booking as we have been let down on several occasions by last minute cancellations.
For those who don't know about the dinners, the evening commences at 6.30 for 7.00pm and following a welcome drink, you will have a cold platter, consisting of a variety of cheeses, paté, and selected pickles to enjoy whilst the winemaker guides us through his wines. At about 8.15, the main course is served, and this will usually be a choice of a meat, fish or vegetarian dish.
Wine with your main course, dessert, coffee etc are extra. Future dinners include:
Wed Jan 12 – Bellevue
Wed Feb 9 &ndash, Amani
Wed Mar 9 &ndash, Wildekrans
Wed Mar 23 – Vergenoegd
Please note that booking is essential for these dinners. (021 - 851 6060)
Educational Wine Tastings
Several people have enquired about holding educational wine tastings here, something more formal than the normal Saturday morning tasting, and not as "grand" as the dinners.
My intention is therefore to start a weekly educational tasting at which wines can be discussed, evaluated, and scored, thereby building up your data base of knowledge and tastings.
These presentations will be directed towards anyone who has an interest in wine, whether they are just starting out on the "Wine Route", or have been on the road for many years. Remember, every year there are many hundreds of new wines made, and given the vast array of variables that Mother Nature throws at us, let alone the new techniques, methods, technologies etc, I would venture to say that it is impossible for a winemaker to make the same wine 2 years in a row! So even the experts have something new to learn every year.
There are many different permutations for such tastings; we can do the wines of 1 farm; different vintages of the same wine; varietals from 1 area (eg Stellenbosch Cabernets), varietals from different areas; different wine routes; warm climate vs cold climate; foreign wines; the list is endless.
If there is sufficient demand (and I'm sure there is!) these tastings will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 - 8.00. Numbers will be limited to a maximum of 20 per week, on a "first-paid, first-served" basis. The cost will be R35, unless special wines are provided.
If there is sufficient interest, these will start on Tuesday 11th January.
The Last Sip!
We want to thank the many of you who have already become "regulars", especially those who have stayed with us from the Southey Vines days.
By opening in the evenings, and providing the educational wine tastings, we hope we are meeting YOUR needs, and we will always aim to provide the services that our guests require (where possible and within reason!).
Please visit the Manuka website at www.manuka.co.za and also forward this email to any of your friends, family or colleagues who might be interested in what we have to offer.
We look forward to welcoming you (back) to Manuka@Southeys very soon.
Stephen & Alison Digby, and the rest of the Team.
